The Art Gallery

Spring 2021

Prof. Cait McCarthy

Cultures of Construction

The gallery came from reading two precedents side by side: the Grape Drying House and the Tongjiang Recycled Brick House. Studying both produced a synthesis specific to neither — an enclosure built from light and brick at the same time.

The light-extrusion logic of the Grape Drying House and the brick screening system of Tongjiang are combined into one dynamic, inhabitable volume. Transparency and opacity work together as the building's main architectural tools.

The southern rear wall is thickened with tight openings that cut direct sun and glare. The front facade is slender and open, pulling in diffused light and wide views across the site.

The difference between front and back creates an experiential quality that runs through the whole gallery. Light filters in from one direction, reflects off surfaces, and produces a quiet contemplative atmosphere suited to the desert site.
